Cold water swimming...
Brockwell
Brockwell Lido is a much loved Art Deco landmark in Brockwell Park, Herne Hill. Serpentine Lido, Hyde Park
Who doesn't love a bit of tradition at Christmas? The annual Christmas Day 100 yard open air race hosted by the Serpentine Swimming Club has been going since 1864, without missing a single year! Not even a bit of ice can deter these brave souls. In 1870, the Daily Telegraph reported that "...in no country save Happy England could such a scene be witnessed...had to break three inches of ice before sufficient water to enable the race to be swum" Brrr.
The oldest swim club in London, may only be for club members, but a lovely Christmas Day stroll through Hyde park on Christmas morning to go watch the swimmers take the plunge is a real experience.
Fun fact! It's called the "Peter Pan Cup" as J. M. Barrie himself provided the silverware and even presented it for a few years!
Central London | Hyde Park | Christmas Day 9.00am | FREE, view from the banks!

Hi Lisa, Thanks for confirming and sharing this info! I spent many a summer down at Tooting Bec Lido with my nan as a child and love that place! Unfortunatley, for this article, they did not respond with their Christmas offering so we had to leave them out for fear of people heading down with their families and being disappointed it was closed! So it’s only open for members only this Christmas, is that correct? Here’s details of how you can become a member peops…. http://www.placesforpeopleleisure.org/centres/tooting-bec-lido/membership
Great article, but you’ve missed the largest unheated freshwater pool in the UK! Tooting Bec lido is open every single day of the year to members and April-September for everyone. It’s welcome is much warmer than the water over winter, with a much loved Finnish sauna and the cafe to make post-dip tea and toast.
